Mortar Calculator

Estimate 60 lb and 80 lb mortar bags from the number of bricks or concrete blocks in your project.

Estimated 80 lb mortar bags

22 × 60 lb bags · 550 units incl. waste

Estimate only. Planning estimate based on published bag yields for standard brick or standard 8-inch concrete block. Actual yield varies with joints, unit size, placement, and workmanship.

Reference note. Yield reference: Sakrete Mortar Mix Type N / Type S lists 35 standard bricks or 12 standard 8-inch blocks per 80 lb bag, and 26 bricks or 9 blocks per 60 lb bag. Quikrete Mortar Mix publishes similar maximum yields.

How the mortar calculator works

Choose whether your project uses standard bricks or standard 8-inch concrete blocks, then enter the number of units. The calculator adds your selected waste allowance and divides by manufacturer-based coverage per bag.

For brick, the planning defaults are 35 standard bricks per 80 lb bag and 26 per 60 lb bag. For standard 8-inch block, the defaults are 12 blocks per 80 lb bag and 9 per 60 lb bag.

Bag counts are rounded up because mortar is purchased in whole bags. Optional bag prices let you compare the estimated material cost of 60 lb and 80 lb bags.

Why actual mortar yield can differ

Manufacturer yields are approximate. A thicker bed, wider head joints, irregular masonry units, excessive droppings, and retempering losses can all reduce the number of units laid per bag.

The default yields used here align with Sakrete's published Mortar Mix Type N and Type S data. Quikrete publishes similar but slightly higher maximum yields for its Mortar Mix.

For a large order, verify the selected product's current technical data sheet and the actual masonry unit dimensions before purchasing.

What the mortar estimate excludes

This calculator estimates bag count and optional bag cost only. It does not calculate sand and cement for site-mixed mortar, grout for reinforced masonry cells, masonry units, reinforcement, delivery, tools, labor, or scaffolding.

Mortar type and strength are application-specific. Follow project specifications, applicable standards, local requirements, and manufacturer instructions.

FAQ
How many bricks will an 80 lb bag of mortar lay?

Sakrete lists about 35 standard bricks per 80 lb bag, while Quikrete lists up to 37 standard bricks per 80 lb bag. This calculator uses 35 as a conservative planning default.

How many 8-inch blocks will an 80 lb bag of mortar lay?

Sakrete lists about 12 standard 8-inch blocks per 80 lb bag, while Quikrete lists up to 13. This calculator uses 12 as the planning default.

Does mortar coverage change with joint size?

Yes. Joint thickness, unit size, bed depth, workmanship, and waste all affect coverage. Manufacturer yield figures are approximate, which is why the calculator includes a waste allowance.

Can I use this for Type N and Type S mortar?

The bag-count math is a quantity estimate, not a mortar-type recommendation. Choose mortar type based on the masonry application, project specification, and manufacturer guidance.
