Default density: 2,700 lb/yd³ (1.35 tons/yd³). Supplier density can vary by stone size, fines, and moisture. Replace the example price with a local supplier quote before budgeting.

How crushed stone quantity is calculated

The calculator converts your rectangular project area into volume using length × width × depth. Depth is entered in inches and converted to feet. Cubic feet are then converted to cubic yards, the unit commonly used to describe bulk aggregate volume.

A waste allowance is added before tonnage is estimated. This helps account for small grade variations and handling losses, but it is not a substitute for a supplier's compaction recommendation.

Finally, the calculator multiplies cubic yards by the editable bulk density. The default is 2,700 lb per cubic yard, equal to 1.35 U.S. tons per cubic yard.

Why crushed stone weight changes

Crushed stone is sold in many gradations. A product with fines can pack more tightly than clean, uniformly sized stone, and that changes the weight of a cubic yard. Moisture content can also move the scale reading.

For a purchase order, the supplier's stated tons-per-yard or pounds-per-cubic-yard value should take priority over any generic calculator default. CountMaterials keeps density editable for that reason.

If a project has multiple layers, calculate each layer separately. For example, a deep base course and a thinner surface layer may use different products with different densities and prices.

What the crushed stone estimate excludes

The cost result covers only the estimated stone tonnage at the price per ton you enter. Delivery, taxes, minimum-load charges, grading, excavation, geotextile, drainage work, edging, and compaction equipment are not included.

This is a quantity estimator, not a structural design tool. Pavement, foundation, retaining-wall, and load-bearing base specifications should follow project drawings, local requirements, and supplier or professional guidance.

FAQ
How much crushed stone do I need?

Enter the length, width, and planned depth. The calculator converts that volume to cubic yards, adds your waste allowance, and estimates tons using the selected crushed-stone density.

How many tons are in one cubic yard of crushed stone?

A planning value around 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard is common, but the actual figure depends on stone size, fines, moisture, and the supplier. This calculator defaults to 1.35 tons per cubic yard.

Is crushed stone the same as gravel?

Not always. Crushed stone is mechanically broken rock with angular faces. Gravel can refer to naturally rounded material or a broader range of aggregate products. The angular shape and amount of fines can affect compaction and bulk density.

Does the calculator account for compaction?

It applies an adjustable waste allowance but does not model a project-specific compaction factor. If your supplier recommends an order factor for compacted depth, use that guidance or increase the waste allowance accordingly.
