Installed concrete driveway costs vary widely by region and finish. A basic broom-finished slab runs $6–8 per square foot in most US markets as of 2026. Decorative finishes push the price higher: stamped concrete runs $10–15/sf, exposed aggregate $10–14/sf, colored concrete $8–12/sf. Heated driveways (with embedded hydronic tubing or electric mats) add $8–15/sf on top of the base cost.
A worked example: a 24×24 two-car driveway at $10/sf. Square footage = 576. Total installed cost = $5,760. The concrete volume at 6 inches thick = 24 × 24 × (6/12) = 288 ft³ = 10.67 cubic yards before waste, 11.7 yards with 10% waste. In 80 lb bags: 65 bags per yard × 11.7 yards = 760 bags. Why concrete costs more than asphalt
Concrete and asphalt are the two most common driveway surfaces, and the cost difference is significant — concrete runs $6–12/sf installed vs asphalt at $3–7/sf. The reason for the gap is material cost (cement is more expensive than oil-based asphalt), labour intensity (concrete requires more finishing work), and cure time (concrete needs 7 days before traffic vs 24 hours for asphalt).
Over a 30-year life, concrete is usually cheaper on a per-year basis. Concrete driveways last 30–50 years with minimal maintenance; asphalt driveways last 15–20 years and require sealing every 2–3 years at $0.25–0.50/sf. A 600-sf asphalt driveway sealed every 3 years over 30 years costs $4,500 in sealing alone — more than the savings vs concrete.
Concrete also handles heat better (it stays cool in direct sun), looks better (color stability, no softening in summer heat), and resists oil stains (asphalt absorbs oil and softens). For northern climates, asphalt's flexibility gives it an edge — it can heave slightly with frost without cracking, while concrete requires proper joints and base preparation to avoid frost damage.
For southern and warm climates, concrete is almost always the better choice. For northern climates with extreme freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt's lower upfront cost and flexibility can be worth the maintenance trade-off. What the driveway cost estimate includes and excludes

Excluded: demolition of existing driveway ($1,000–3,000 for concrete, $500–1,500 for asphalt), excavation of unsuitable soil ($200–1,000 depending on volume), tree removal ($300–1,500 per tree), permits ($50–300), and engineering for unusual loads (RV pads, heavy vehicle traffic). Soil testing runs $500–1,500 if your soil is unknown or questionable.
Decorative finishes add to the base cost. Stamped concrete patterns (slate, brick, stone) add $4–7/sf and require a release agent and sealer. Colored concrete (integral pigment) adds $1–3/sf.
